Welcome to the official North Gem School District #149 web page!

Home of the Cowboys!

We are located in Bancroft, Idaho which is part of the picturesque Gem Valley in Southeastern Idaho. We serve the public education needs of families living from Lund to Chesterfield, and sometimes beyond.   We are governed by a five member Board of Trustees elected by the patrons of our district.

In the event of future school closures students will be online for their learning and instruction. Online assignment completion will count for attendance that day. School is closed when travel conditions are unsafe or when temperatures are -20 or colder.

What’s Right with North Gem?

March went by super-fast, and the schools have been super-busy.

Elementary: Second grade held its annual Pancake Day on March 14th, and it was a success! The second graders did a wonderful job of seating their guests and taking and delivering orders. We couldn’t have done it without our amazing moms and dads who helped cook pancakes and donate supplies. The second graders have used Pancake Day as an extended learning opportunity. They did a write-up on How To Make Pancakes and will use the data from the order tickets to make line plots.

Jr. High: Spring is already here, and the school year is rapidly coming to a close. There are lots of activities to fill up the remainder of the year. The middle school is getting ready for the track season to start. Our first meet is on April 3, at 4:00 in Snake River. The team is really excited to get started, hopefully the weather will cooperate, and they will be able to attend all of their track meets. We had a great turnout for the parent teacher conference showcase. The students had fun displaying work, chatting with parents and friends, playing games, entering drawings, and eating snacks. A big thanks goes out to parents for their participation. The middle school just participated in PI day. And did an excellent job. Each one received a mini pie for their participation. Ciara received her own regular sized pie for winning the contest. Some of the students were involved with Journey Gunter’s (Senior Project) play.  The students came to after school practices to help her complete her project.  The play was a great success. The students had an awesome time sharing their talents. The middle school is having a reading contest to see which team can read the most books by the end of the semester. So, remind your students to read at home, so they can help their team win. I have watched the students grow and mature, sharing knowledge, skills, and kindness to help others! It’s great to be a part of middle school.

High School:  The High School has been super busy!  On February 28th, our juniors went to The College and Career Fair at Marsh Valley High School.  All tech colleges and universities in Idaho came to meet with all the juniors in Southeastern Idaho.  The whole High School went to the ISU Tech Expo again this year to see all of the amazing technology and career opportunities available to them.  Camille Yost and Amber Rose took a team of our 8th and 9th graders to compete at the ISU-IDX competition and our kids did a great job.  Mr. Eiman took eight of our students on a Cosmetology, Barber and Art Education Exploration trip – they went to Paul Mitchell School in Rexburg and the College of Tech Education and Art Education College at ISU.  We had our second Student Showcase, and we joined forces with the Middle School this time.  It was a great success with most parents and students attending.  Mrs. C and her “Quiz Bowl” were a big hit.  Thanks to all of the parents who came and participated with us!  We had a Shakespeare Troupe that came and performed “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” for us and they were very good.  They also had a workshop with our drama club after their performance.  Our drama club is working hard on their production of “Arsenic and Old Lace,” which they will perform for us next month.  We got to participate in Pancake Day and we hope Mrs. Ball and the 2nd graders know how much the High School students LOVE Pancake Day!  We did our Pi contest and our winners were Alex Curtis, who went 107 places past the decimal and Journey Gunter, who went 74 places.  CONGRATS to both Alex and Journey!  Our StuCo sponsored our MORP dance, which was a great success.  Our track team has two new coaches this year – Corry and Hailey Hatch.  They’re working hard with our team to have a successful season.  They’ve already had a meet in Raft River and they’re going to Malad on Thursday.  We only have 32 days of school left after spring break!  Where has the year gone?

Alyson Reed attended the USSYP week in Washington DC the first week of March. She represented Idaho and North Gem with pride and confidence. She had a great time and an enlightening learning experience. Aly is very grateful for everyone that encouraged her and helped her apply for and receive this scholarship.

Our seniors are finishing up their senior projects in March and will turn in portfolios and present the projects on April 11. They also wish to thank everyone that assisted them with their projects.

Thank you to everyone who supports us as we continue to work for excellence and success in our school classes and activities.

Cowboy Makes a Difference

Mr. Terry Hatch

Terry has filled so many roles in our school district and community for many years.  He has taught our students, shared his musical talents, drove students on buses to and from home and to games & fieldtrips, played music for their dances, announced at our home games, and provided friendship and encouragement to so many people.  We are so grateful to Terry for his selflessness and will miss him as he leaves us and serves a mission in Japan with his lovely wife.  Thank you Terry!

Cowboy Spirit

Mrs. Lisa Barfuss

Lisa and her husband live in Bancroft and have had two children graduate from North Gem. She works at the extension office in Soda Springs as a 4-H Program Coordinator. She has been volunteering in the middle school cooking and crafts classes for two years. She is very helpful, and always has great ideas. She has been teaching them easy food items to cook on their own. The students have loved learning the art of cooking, and how to make these meals, desserts, and snacks. They also love the opportunity to eat everything that they cook. The students will tell her what they want to bake, cook or create, and she will come up with something to fit in that category. This is one of her many strengths. She loves to see students succeed, and will go to any lengths to help them. The students love her funny personality, and the way that she makes cooking fun. She has helped to make this cooking class a big success.

You are the reason we believe in good people.
